Armenian Youth Foundation Announces Additional 2014 Grant Recipients
Watertown, MA – December 1, 2014. On the heels of its historic $100,000 award to Camp Haiastan, the Armenian Youth Foundation Board of Directors has announced several additional grant awards for 2014. “2014 was a record year in terms of the number of grant requests received,” said Grants Committee Chair Michael Guzelian. “Recognizing that all of the submissions came from extremely worthwhile organizations, the hardest part of the review process is determining which submissions we can in fact support.
THE HOVNANIAN SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM
A private, not-for-profit, non-sectarian, independent, early childhood, elementary and middle school, the Hovnanian School, based in New Milford, NJ, provides every student with an integrated, interdisciplinary education that builds on a strong American and Armenian heritage – one that honors tradition, pursues innovation, celebrates educational achievement, and values family and community.The Foundation’s $4,920 grant to the School’s music program will enhance their current, traditional music offering through the purchase of an upright piano.
THE GENOCIDE EDUCATION PROJECT
The Foundation’s $2,950 grant will help fund the production and distribution of a newly created curriculum involving the Near East Relief and America’s response to the Armenian Genocide. The new curriculum will also be supported by a speaker series and education workshop series in selected communities across the country including: California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
ST. STEPHEN’S ARMENIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School (SSAES) in Watertown, MA is a private elementary school dedicated to educational excellence in an environment rich in Armenian Culture. Since it was established in 1984, the school has distinguished itself with its Armenian character, academic strength, devoted staff and low student-to-teacher ratio. SSAES has grown steadily by combining a strong American educational curriculum with Armenian language, religion and history - all within a positive learning environment.The Foundation’s $1,150 grant will be used in support of the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Initiative. In particular, the grant will enhance the initiative’s technology component thereby allowing teachers to quickly access applications and visuals that will demonstrate STEM concepts to students.
SACRED WRATH – A DRAMATIC PRODUCTION
Sacred Wrath is a dramatic production written by New Jersey’s Taleen Babayan. Named for the poem by Vahan Tekeyan, Sacred Wrath tells the story of Armenians’ historical struggle for genocide recognition through the experiences of contemporary Armenians also dealing with the tribulations of Azeri aggression.The Foundation’s $1,000 grant will be used to cover theater rent, honorariums for professional Armenian actors, set pieces and booklets.
